Yang BingRu,a professor of Information and Engineering Institute in University of Science and Technology Beijing, is a mentor of doctor student and he is also a superintendent in Knowledge and Engineering graduate school. He used to be a vice-director of Computer Department, and he also used to be a subdecanal of Information and Engineering Institute. Professor Yang BingRu is a specialist with extra contribution, who obtains the special allowance of State Department. He is an international enrolled science-technology expert. Professor Yang is a part-time honorary director of Fuzzy Information and Fuzzy Engineering Academy China,which belongs to International Common System Academy. Professor Yang used to be one of senior supervisors in CIT. And he used to be one of experts in NIT. Professor Yang used to be one of senior consultants in Patent Office Hong Kong. Professor Yang used to be one of syndics in National 863 High and New Technology Project,in National Physical Science Fund Project, in Education Ministry Science and Technology Project, and in several domestic and overseas well-known publications. And he was also retained to give lectures as a part-time professor. Professor Yang used to be present in international academic conference for more than ten times, giving lectures to conferee and cooperating with them.  And he used to be selected committeeman and branch chairman of international programm committee for several times.

Professor Yang BingRu is always being engaged in teaching and researching in the field of modern mathematics and computer science and technology. His main research direction includes: Knowledge Discovery and Intelligent System, Flexible modeling and integrating technologically. And his chief achievement is followings:

1. Knowledge Discovery (KD) and intelligent system direction:

Professor Yang BingRu is a famous expert, who earlier enters KD field in domestic, a newly crossing subject. He spent more than ten years in entirely, steadily and systematically researching structured data and complex type data (such as Web and multi-media). And then he broke through the two main issues in modern KD progress.

Ninth International KD and Data Mining Conference was held on 27th Aug 2003 in Washington, and all present experts thinks that there is much opportunity and challenge in data mining, and there also are two main issues in modern KD progress. 

Then which is the first issue in modern KD progress? U.Fayyad thought:”along with long-range of science development, what holds back KD’s development is lack of foundation theory and the obvious expatiation to problem or challenge in KD.” He also considered:”there is nearly no theory or engineering practice to guide what we should do. And it is also ‘an piece of unknown art’. Now we need theory, with which we can find out engineering resolution, to guide us what and how to do. Then we can pass our ‘workmanship’ to others. This kind of situation is concurrent with tremendous passion of practitioner or the man who becomes interested in application. All of them come from different fields. But without science foundation or sustainable academic development, there were no progress or consolidation in this field.” R.Uthurusamy believed:” Web’s application and manufacture’s ballyhoo will impact on this field’s development in short order. And this makes us spend much more vigor in database selling, CRM and OLAP. There is no good for us in boosting KDD radically or scientifically. During KDD research, we must eliminate that disturb and then make great efforts to resolve the real and essential problem in KDD.

Some scholars have made much progress in researching basic theory of KDD. And some of them emphasized the efficiency of KD when taking database into account. Some of them emphasized the effectiveness of KD when taking machine learning into account. Some of them emphasized the validation of KD when taking statistic analysis into account. And others emphasized the maximum utility of KD when taking microeconomics into account. But it is a pity that all of them have not discussed its foundation theory deeply. They didn’t give us the implementation of KD. So they can neither improve KD performance radically, nor can they resolve the challenge problems arising in KDD’s developing process. In fact, according to all progress mentioned above, what they have provided is that they put forward methodology foundation of KDD for us. If we want to construct its theory system, we must grasp the spirit of KDD, and then put forward the theory foundation corresponding to its essence. What is KDD’s essence? In order to answer this question we should regard KDD process (system) as a kind of cognitive process and we should regard KDD process (system) as a kind of non-balanced transformation progress (system) in non-linearity kinetic system.

  In this situation, supported by 11 projects, including National Physical Science Fund Project, National 863 High and New Technology Project, Education Ministry Science and Technology Project and National Ninth-five Plan Keystone Project, Professor Yang BingRu spent more than ten years in entirely, steadily and systematically researching structured data, complex type data (such as Web and multi-media) data mining. According to this new subject, Professor Yang brought forward his own points on KDD’s develop process and then tried to discuss it more deeply, while other scholars, both in domestic and overseas, were engaged in researching algorithm and application in order to keep up with mainstream development of KDD. After his concentrative research, Professor Yang have made series of progress:

(1) Jumping out from mainstream development of KDD In 1977, Professor Yang BingRu originally brought forward a new path, in which he studied KD with systemic theory from the beginning of inherent cognitive mechanism. Here his core idea is that he regarded the process of KD as a kind of cognitive process, regarded KD system as cognitive system, then researched the complicated KD process by using idea or method (especially including modeling method) of system and cognitive science. He is the professor who firstly finds that the inherent cognitive mechanism of KD system contains three principles, including the double bases cooperating mechanism, the double basis fusion mechanism and the information increasing mechanism. According to the three mechanisms, he provides the key theorem and realizes them in technology separately.1) Structure corresponding theorem--- based on cognitive psychology of “original idea purpose” and “the repaired psychological information”, he has found the corresponding relationship between the database and the knowledge base under the specifically constructing; With “category theory”, ”ultra picture theory”, and the “ethics theory” we have improved, he has demonstrated the corresponding theorem of the structure and designed the coordinating device with the inspiring type and with the safeguarding type. And he has established theory foundation for “directional research” and “directional mining”. In addition, he has found the probability estimate theorem on reachable relationship, etc. 2) Equivalent theorem of course logic--- He has found the inner link of the course of the two piece of knowledge ---knowledge discover in database (KDD) and knowledge discover in knowledge (KDK) , which seems it has no relationship with each other ostensibly; This makes it complement with each other in the system(course) of the KD in unison. It reaches a higher realm of a kind of the machine intelligence. He has designed the coordinating device including R type, S type, and T type. 3) The theorem of parameter evolving in the process of dynamic mining---He has found that the parameter evolves the theorem in the process of dynamic mining. This is the law that the unexpected regular parameter evolves, based on cognitive physics “language field” and “information pervasion principle”; He successfully classifies 1024 kinds of configuration situations as 16 kinds(except the fluctuation type), and provide 5 kinds of subject analysis , which at present is considered to be the difficult point in KD. In addition, by using theory of distributed contradiction area, theory of fixed threshold value in the changed talking and theory of information entropy Professor Yang has grasped the concept layer and the space distribution of the grain size in the dynamic process, etc. He also has gotten his achievement on data classification and association analysis. He has studied the inherent cognitive mechanism and discoveries its essence, its principle, and its complexity, which are potential in cognitive system. To a great extent, he has solved the problems which are extreme challenges in mainstream development. These problems are "field knowledge can be coupled into finding course "," knowledge and synchronous evolution of database", " real time maintenance in knowledge base "

(2) He is the professor who independently puts forward that the knowledge discover in database of knowledge (KDK) for the first time. This is a special topic to be resolved both in domestic and overseas so far. According to fact in knowledge base, he adopts inducing learning method to induce and make hypothesis, then he adopts Karl Napu’s inducing logic to verify and evaluate them. According to rules in database, he adopts generalized concept grid to induce and make hypothesis and then he adopts Korn’s inducing logic to verify and evaluate them.

(3) Professor Yang BingRu leads out 7 kinds of new course models. It merges three mechanisms previously mentioned into the already existing knowledge discover model. This derives out 10 kinds of new technology methods -------Directly deduced by three mechanisms and new course models. This initiates 4 kinds of new-type practical intelligence systems. It is resulted from emerging innovative technology of the data mining and classic practical intelligence system. According to this series of original technology invention, its advanced and novelty ability is testified by five continuous newly checking and six national invention patents (three of them has been authorized----the sum of these immaterial assets is 2210000 dollars, evaluated by international authority organization). And the research on inherent cognitive mechanism also ensures its original creativity.

(4) Synthetically after getting the achievements previously mentioned, professor Yang BingRu puts forward the knowledge discover theory, KDTIM, based on inherent cognitive mechanism in 2002. it seems that this kind of research just conforms the development trend in KD field. And it is supported by 3 mechanisms (principle) as its theory pillar and formed by 5 reciprocally contacting layers, including basic theory layer, inherent cognitive mechanism layer, course model layer, technology method layer, intelligent system layer.

(5) Base on KDTIM, being a part of realization and carrier of the theory, Professor Yang Bingru designs and realizes ICCKDSS. ICCKDSS is an integrated-combined component. And it has its own knowledge copyright. Following is the appraisal in the key scientific and technological project organized by Education Ministry:" The achievement of ICCKDSS is an innovative study, which combines theory, software and application as a whole one; On the whole, the system reaches the international advanced level ". Compared with the existing knowledge discover software product both in domestic and overseas, ICCKDSS has its advantage. Supported by KDTIM, ICCKDSS uses entirely new model and algorithm. It has its own design style with combination component. ICCKDSS contains structured and semi-structured (none-structured) data mining. It has KDK’s unique superiority and function. In May 2003, National Science and Technology Ministry warrants ICCKDSS as a keystone spreading planning project and imburses it. It is written in Science Time:” the ICCKDSS’s birth in University of Science and Technology Beijing declares that the level of long-distance education in China reach international advanced level.

(6) Professor Yang applied KDTCM and ICCKDSS into following fields: aluminium electroanalysis production, agriculture, long-distance education network, weather,  international commercial affair, etc. So the theory and the software are validly verified.

Then what is the second issue in modern KD progress? In Gartner report, five pieces of key technology is listed, which will influence industry greatly in three or five years. Among them, KDD and artificial intelligence is listed firstly. And in Gartner report, the research of parallel computer architecture and the research of KDD should be one of the ten new technology fields, which should be invested in five years. These fields and technology stand for development from of modern science. Thus they attract modern computer scientists and other science technicians. And they are most hopeful, give more challenge, they are called multi-subject crossing. So there are few people can enter these fields. However according to data mining and KD, as well as its application, there is much more aculeate condemnation on its application. This is the second issue in modern KD progress.  

Professor Yang, as well as his scientific research team, spent six years in organizing and implementing the novelty technology of data mining and intelligence system in aluminium electroanalysis, agriculture, long-distance education network, weather and international commercial affair fields, etc. Especially he used data mining to achieve more remarkable benefit and he also take control and management of aluminium electroanalysis production  into account to widen its application then he obtained considerable economic benefit (every year 10500000 Yuan) and tremendous social benefit. He resolved some classic problems. In the past, these problems were difficult to solve or maybe they couldn’t be settled completely in real fields. In this field Professor Yang tried to do more application research investigation on resolving the problems. It has already popularized and applied in 7 idiographic units. And the man in the seven units who have used KDTICM and ICCKDSS give such evaluation: the software has excellent performance in practical utilization, it is used conveniently and its interface is wonderful. According to ICCKDSS, Professor Yang has signed the sell and developed agreement with 13 companies including domestic and international companies. And he also cooperated in developing the software together with U.S.A. Zaptron Company and signed agreement with Hamburg University of Berlin Germany to develop this software corporately. Now Professor Yang BingRu is devoting himself into researching international important subject. He will apply KDTICM and ICCKDSS not only into protein’s three-dimension forecast,but also into theory of complete competition in microeconomics.

(7)Appraisement inside and outside of country:Professor Yang BingRu obtained high level creative production, which includes the theory, the software and the application. 2002, in EMCCS held in Americ, he also gained " achievement award " (the only persons who gains the award in mainland), which is awarded by International Science Institute; and obtained "international scientific and technological registration expert " certification (Jun 24 2002) (the only persons who gains the award in mainland), which was awarded by International Technological Institute; Then in Jun 26 2006, he also again gained " eximious achievement award " (the only persons who gains the award in mainland). He also obtained the outstanding thesis award in international conference; L.A.Zadeh (an international famous scientist, the founder of fuzzy theory), R.A.Hamid (president of international science institute), Professor H.D.Burkhard and five domestic academicians all highly evaluated Professor Yang BingRu’s theory as “original theory”. Following is the L.A.Zadeh’s comment on Professor Yang BingRu’s monograph published in America: "Obviously, no matter on which aspect, your theory is more successful than the references. Your work is very important. And your thought is original and profound"; R.A.Hamid, president of International Science Institute, wrote to China Artificial Intelligence Academy " in my opinion, KDTICM is the most important  contribution to this field ", and he wrote in" achievement award ": "The honor with highly popularity has been only rewarded for those scholars who make great contribution in their research field, and for those who probably make great influence on their research field "; Nowadays, a group of scholars either in domestic or abroad are studying and applying Professor Yang Bingru’s theory.

In a word, he broke through the two main issues (conundrum) in international modern KD progress.

2. Flexible modeling and direction of integrating technologically:

(1) Professor Yang BingRu puts forward the new logic model, the new reasoning mechanism and the new integrated technology, those are used in intellectual control and intellectual management, such as suffused Boolean algebra and much hierarchical structure logic, the model of reasoning that causality determines the nature and cells automatic machine model of broad sense, the induced mechanism of obtaining experts knowledge, the fuzzy integrated technology based on fuzzy language field and fuzzy language optimize models etc. And with them Professor Yang resolved four difficult problems, which are unable to be settled or difficult to be settled.

1) the logical analysis on normalized test

It is Professor Yang who put forward the suffused Boolean algebra model firstly, including D-B figure and D-B pattern, the form system of D-B type and its algebra, language information model, Professor Yang illustrated the theory foundation of the normalization test designer and gave the formula of the test times in maturity normalization.

2) a kind of harmony control model with more variable (or more parameter) in determined deducing

Professor Yang firstly put forward the frame of language field description, the causality in determined deducing, the intellectual language control policy and the design of intellectual controller.

3) the hierarchical structure method of function analysis in great system and the optimized integration technology in fuzzy language

According to the function analysis in great system, which is applied in value project, Professor Yang firstly put forward the integration frame consisted of logic model, optimized language model, and normalization test. And its practicability is obvious.

4) the integrated technology on the basis of dangerous grade evaluation of production device in the fuzzy language field

To produce the dangerous grade evaluation of the device, Professor Yang firstly put forward the integrated frame, which contains the language field of dangerous factor , fuzzy judging synthetically , fuzzy clusters analysis , fuzzy logic , fuzzy language , fuzzy statistics ,etc. And they have already been put into practice and run actually.

(2) Professor Yang applies the new creative model and new technology in project applications fields, such as intellectual control, value project, security system engineering, etc. From 1991 to 1993, Professor Yang BingRu participated in the national-wide project on great modernization management -----Value project, and won the relevant prize on teaching value project (on CCTV and Tianjin TV). He also made product popularization and application deeply in more than ten large and medium-sized enterprises, which resulted in 21,475,000 Yuan in economic benefit and 1,800,000 Yuan in social benefit according to financial affair’s identification.

(3) Among the achievement mentioned previously, Professor Yang obtained two pieces of advanced science and technology award in province and ministry level. He also gained  1 silver medal on the 46th international EUREKA invention award and won 1 national patent for invention.

3. aspects of teaching :

  Professor Yang have taught 12 courses, while teaching without textbooks and drafts; He have been attended in teaching proseminar several times and he pursued scientific teaching style and artistic teaching style. Teachers and students, who attended his lecture, all gave high comment on his teaching. He put forward teaching view of core theory in knowledge logic structure and teaching method combined with knowledge logic structure and thought inducement chart. He published the paper of the teaching reform and took on the project of education reform. He edited a lot of teaching materials by himself or as an editor in chief.He used to teach value project on CCTV and TianJin TV and won prize. Professor Yang Bingru have tutored one young teacher, one post-doctor, trained 52 doctors, 56 Masters and 6 foreign students successively.

4. In scientific production:

25 subjects through national and provincial qualification or verification, 5 studying subjects (subject director); Having published more than 317 thesis successively; Having published 14 works (7 works finished independently---one of them is written in English and is published in America , and 7 finished jointly); Having obtained two international awards, having obtained 18 progressive prizes and academic prizes in science and technology at provincial and ministerial levels being the first place; Having obtained 7 national invention patent certifications, one item of software copyright certification, one software certification, being the only inventor. In one word, having obtained high level creative production, which includes the theory, the software and the application.

In honor of his achievement and contribution, Professor Yang Bingru’s name is written in World Famous Mathematicians, World Famous Men, World Science and Technology Consultants, World Excellent Celebrities, Nobel 100 Years 100 Men. And he has been reported as famous information expert, and famous computer scientist and KD expert by following newspapers and periodicals: Science and technology daily, Renmin Drawing, China Express, China Academy of Science, Science Chinese. And he was also reported on Tianjin TV, broadcasting domestically and overseas both in Chinese and in English.
