目前,美国Sarnoff公司、Iridian Technologies公司、Mitsubishi公司美国实验室,英国电信公司,日本松下公司、OKI公司和韩国LG公司都在从事虹膜图像获取技术方面的研究,并且研制出了适用于各种不同应用的自动虹膜图像获取装置,如松下公司的BM-ET330、LG公司研发的IrisAccess 4000等。但是,这些装置多数都造价昂贵。2000年,美国国防高级研究项目署(DARPA)启动了名为HID的研究项目,即远距离身份识别,其中包括远距离虹膜识别项目(Iris Recognition at a Distance)。Wildes等人设计了一套精密的可在5~10米远的距离内拍摄清晰虹膜图像的装置。除了必要的硬件设备外,Wildes还使用了超分辨率等算法来增强图像的分辨率。软硬件相结合,这是今后虹膜图像获取的发展方向。绝大部分的虹膜摄像头要求用户在成像时保持相对静止的姿态,美国Sarnoff公司近几年研制了Iris on Move技术,在3米外识别正常步速行人的虹膜图像,用户只需要脸朝正前方,不需要特意去凝视虹膜摄像头,在不经意间实现虹膜图像的主动捕捉,适合于大规模流通人群的身份鉴别。LG公司则推出了具有自动变焦功能和可同时识别双眼的虹膜识别装置。Iridian公司发布了能够用于手机和PDA等移动设备的虹膜成像仪。
